The Lost City

- Posted in Modules by

The Lost City (B4) is a Dungeons & Dragons adventure module by 1981 Basic creator Tom Moldvay. It also works fine with modern retroclones like Basic Fantasy RPG.

It was first published by TSR in 1982. The working title for the module was "The Lost City of Cynidicea." Moldvay designed the module as a low-level scenario to give novice Dungeon Masters experience in fleshing out adventures such that it is only partially complete. The plot involves the player characters discovering a ruined subterranean city slowly rising out of the sands.

Ernest Gary Gygax Jr.'s passing marks the loss of another figure from the early days of tabletop roleplaying games, but his life was not without controversy. While he benefited from his father’s legacy as one of the co-creators of Dungeons & Dragons, his own public statements and business dealings often drew criticism. What can we learn from his mistakes?

Initially released in 2013, it has the Old-School vibe of a classic. This multi-module work contains over 100 pages of adventures for lower to mid-level characters.

B3: Palace of the Silver Princess is an adventure module for the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set, but works fine with modern retroclones like Basic Fantasy RPG.

This is the re-written version, with Jean Wells' name on it but much revised by Tom Moldvay. In future episodes we'll look at the original release by Jean, and do a comparison.

The plot of Palace of the Silver Princess revolves around a country frozen in time by a strange red light. The only seemingly unaffected location and the apparent source of the glow is the royal palace. The adventurers must restore the flow of time and save the country.

B2: The Keep on the Borderlands is a Dungeons & Dragons adventure module by Gary Gygax, first printed in December 1979. In it, player characters are based at a keep and investigate a nearby series of caves that are filled with a variety of monsters. It was designed to be used with the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set, and was included in the 1979–1982 editions of the Basic Set but works fine with modern retroclones like Basic Fantasy RPG.

Both Basic Fantasy RPG (BFRPG) and Old-School Essentials (OSE) are retroclones inspired by early Dungeons & Dragons, but they have distinct approaches and philosophies. Here are the major differences and reasons you might choose one over the other:

Initially released in 2007, it has the Old-School vibe of a classic. This multi-module work contains fourteen short adventures (over 80 pages of material!) for beginning to mid-level characters.
